Certificates & Certifications: Not the Same Thing

Certificate programs allow you to take a small number of courses to gain a deeper understanding of a specific aspect of a field of study.

Certifications are granted by organizations associated with particular industries, such as education, accounting or counseling. To earn a certification, you generally have to fulfill educational and field learning requirements and pass an exam offered by an official certifying agency. While credits earned through certificate or degree programs can sometimes help to fulfill educational requirements required by certifying organizations, this is not always the case. If you are interested in earning a specific professional certification, please check with the certifying organization to learn what they require.

CERTIFICATE CERTIFICATION
Result of taking a course or series of courses with a specific focus Usually the result of a combination of education, experience and passing an official examination
Granted by an educational institution Granted by a credentialing body
Can be listed on a resume Often results in a specific designation for use after your name (CPA, for example)
