GREENSBURG, PA-Senior graphic design major Kristen Koerner, daughter of Tracy Koerner of Monongahela, PA was recently named the Act 101 Student of the Year. She was honored at a luncheon on Saturday, March 24th at St. Francis University. The Award is presented annually to students from the eight Southwestern Pennsylvanian schools who excel in academics and community outreach programs throughout their college careers. Each award recipient is recognized and honored for their accomplishments. "I’m really honored to be the recipient of this award," Koerner said. "I never thought I’d be the one to receive it." "Every year we choose an outstanding upperclassman who has shown excellence in academics and has given back to the College," said Linda Sukolsky, academic counselor and coordinator of the deciding program for Collegiate Academic and Personal Success (CAPS). "Kristen has really gotten involved in the campus community and has achieved the goals she set for herself." Koerner has tutored graphic design students at various levels, interned at Off The Wall Graphics and served as a member of the Advisory Board for CAPS Forward. She has also held a work-study position in the Office of Public Information through all four years of her college career where she works with newspaper clippings and layout and design of campus materials. In addition, Koerner has completed projects for campus faculty and staff including department logo designs, implementation of the Setonian web site, and the creation of brochures and programs for department functions. The Act 101 is a state grant that provides funding for support services such as tutoring and academic counseling for students.
