Dietetics Major Wins at Pitching Business Idea for “Born Fresh”
Nutrition and dietetics major Rachel Allison just received $1,000 from Ƶ University’s Wukich Center for coming up with a great business concept – and being able to promote it under pressure. Rachel won this year’s Elevator Pitch Contest by beating the competition at the task of selling her business idea for “Born Fresh” in the time it would take to ride the elevator with a potential investor.
Born Fresh, says Rachel, is “a meal delivery service for expecting mothers. Mothers select their current trimester and choose breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options, which are created by a team of specialized registered dietitians for that particular stage of pregnancy. Partnerships with local farmers and clean label foods provide mothers with the freshest of meals. Born Fresh will help mothers ‘deliver fresh and healthy babies.’ ”
Rachel is passionate about good diet and good health, and it shows in everything she does. She serves as vice president of the Dietetics Club, president of the Kappa Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Kappa Omicron Nu National Honor Society, and is a student member of the Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She also volunteers for organizations like the Westmoreland County Food Bank, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Feeding the Spirit.
“I am an advocate for a balanced lifestyle and the idea of food as preventative medicine,” she says. “I want to become further involved in research with the maternal diet and chronic diseases and illnesses that relate to the diet of pregnant mothers.”
