抖阴短视频 Student Battling Cancer Amazes with Impromptu Cleveland Clinic Concert
Junior Erin McElhenny Sings While Receiving Chemotherapy Treatment
Erin McElhenny wanted to get some Starbucks and listen to beautiful music when she headed to the lobby of the Cleveland Clinic during her inpatient chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin鈥檚 Lymphoma last week.听
The 抖阴短视频 junior got way more than she bargained for after she ended up on stage with Cleveland Pops cellist Kent Collier, singing pieces by Schubert, Puccini听
鈥淚t made me feel good that even though I鈥檓 in this situation, I can still do something that used to bring me joy in my life,鈥 she said.
础听听McElhenny posted of the impromptu concert has been viewed thousands of times on Facebook, Twitter听
鈥淚 thought my friends would make a big deal of it, thinking 鈥極h, that鈥檚 just Erin being extra, singing opera in her pajamas,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淏ut when the doctors were taking videos, I thought, 鈥榦h man, this might be a thing.鈥欌
McElhenny was diagnosed with Hodgkin鈥檚 Lymphoma in March 2018. She was able to finish the spring semester at 抖阴短视频 and planned to return in the fall once her chemotherapy treatments were completed.听
But chemo was extended by several months, delaying her return to 抖阴短视频, where she is a Vocal Performance major with a concentration in Opera.听
With a clean bill of health, she visited campus in the fall and registered for spring classes, but a check-up in early January revealed cancerous activity 鈥 and McElhenny was forced to delay her schooling yet again.听
She is hopeful that a bone marrow transplant scheduled for April 鈥 using her own stem cells 鈥 will enable her to return to 抖阴短视频 this fall.听
In the meantime, she is receiving treatment on and off at the Cleveland Clinic to prepare for that transplant.听
That鈥檚 where she was when she headed to the lobby to watch one of the concerts that take place each weekday during the lunch hour.
After listening to Collier play for a little while, the pair struck up a conversation. McElhenny talked about her vocal studies and mentioned that she sings opera.听
鈥淗e had me sing a few bars of the opera 鈥楲a Boheme鈥 and then said, 鈥楲et鈥檚 sing some more,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淎 bunch of doctors came along and were listening. Someone brought me flowers. It was so sweet.鈥
McElhenny was a bit critical of her performance 鈥 noting her voice cracks 鈥 but she鈥檚 realistic, noting it was done in her pajamas while hooked up to chemotherapy.
鈥淚 have poison juice going into my body, so my performance was really fine,鈥 she said.听
She鈥檚 also very thankful to be treated at the Cleveland Clinic 鈥 a place that embraces the power of the arts.听
鈥淭hey are very big on music therapy there, even beyond the concerts, I had a music therapist come to my bedside and sing with me 鈥 just like the music therapy majors at 抖阴短视频 do,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 feel that made the time in the hospital go by so much faster.鈥
Erin keeps in close contact with her friends and professors at 抖阴短视频, including Dr. Mark Boyle, Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music.听
"She sent me the video before it was posted anywhere else,鈥 Boyle said. 鈥淚t was amazing. I'm really proud of her to be dealing with all of this - she really just faces it听
McElhenny, an Erie native, graduated from McDowell High School, the alma mater of another recent graduate who has battled Hodgkin鈥檚 Lymphoma, Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner.听
鈥淗e graduated two years ahead of me, and while I did not know him, I would have sung the National Anthem at some of his high school football games,鈥 she said.听
McElhenny is looking forward to returning to 抖阴短视频 and getting the chance to perform with Setonia, the women鈥檚 chorale, and seeing her friends and professors once again.
鈥淚 really do love 抖阴短视频 so much, I just feel like it鈥檚 a wonderful environment for me,鈥 she said.
