HR Student Takes Her Job at Lockheed Martin To the Next Level
Carolyn Younker works in human resources for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. A certified professional (SHRM-CP) with two associate’s degrees, Carolyn decided she needed something more to move her career forward. So she enrolled in the online Human Resource Management B.S. Program at Ƶ. Recently, she answered a few questions about her experience as a working adult earning a degree.
What made you decide to further your education?
It has always been a goal of mine to go back to school. Earning a bachelor’s degree will open up many doors for me in my career field and within my current company.
Why did you choose the Online Bachelor’s Degree Program at Ƶ?
The online program fits easily into my life. The flexibility and convenience of the online classes is paramount when you are trying to juggle work/life/school as an adult. The employer discount and tuition deferment was a huge factor in my decision, along with the amount of credits that transferred from my two associate’s degrees.
"You can achieve great things at any stage in your life."
What’s the experience been like so far?
The experience so far has been positive. Even though I have never met my instructors in person, I have never felt a lack of support from them. They are committed to the success of their online students and provide flexibility and understanding when needed. I also feel that the quality of the education that I am receiving is comparable to the traditional on-campus programs.
Have you been able to apply things you’re learning in the HR degree program in your current job?
Absolutely! The classes I have taken so far have provided me with a greater scope of understanding of business management and the inner workings of a company. This has enabled me to understand the different departments in my company, and to provide more meaningful consulting when a problem arises. My education in the HR degree program so far has helped me to develop into a more well-rounded professional as I have more understanding of the whole business.
What would you like to share about going back to school with other working professionals who may be considering getting a bachelor’s degree?
It might not be easy, but it’s not impossible! I don’t regret waiting to figure out what I wanted to do as a career before going back for my bachelor’s. I think the education, at least for me, is more meaningful when you can apply it directly to what you are doing and accomplishing in realtime in your career as an adult. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and give yourself grace. You can achieve great things at any stage in your life.
