New Master of Education Degree in Critical & Cultural Literacy to Begin in Fall 2022

Ƶ University is accepting applications for the inaugural cohort of a new Master of Education Degree in Critical & Cultural Literacy in Fall 2022.

The online M.Ed. in Critical & Cultural Literacy is aimed at certified teachers who want to pursue a career as a literacy professional. Students will graduate from the program prepared to pass the Pennsylvania state teaching certification exam for reading specialists.

“The Critical & Cultural Literacy master’s program at Ƶ is a relevant and robust program that is unique to the Pittsburgh region,” said Julie Warnick, Director of Graduate and Online Studies at Ƶ. “The program will prepare literacy professionals to not only provide reading instruction to PreK-12 students across the curriculum but to teach students to consider multiple perspectives."

The Master of Education in Critical and Cultural Literacy at Ƶ is composed of 10 online courses, including a practicum with in-person components. Courses are offered in flexible, 8-week online sessions and the program can be completed in as little as a year.

Courses in the program take a critical, research-based, culturally-responsive approach to literacy. Instruction is rooted in progressive theories of language and social development and is aligned to both the Pennsylvania Department of Education Guidelines for Reading Specialists and the International Literacy Association Standards for Reading.

Students in the program may qualify for tuition discounts and aid, and the GMAT or GRE are not required for admission.
